I’m His Golden Fan

04 Jun

I now feel bad for laughing at Bappi Lahiri for all these years. Anybody awesome enough to make this ad is okay by me.

Bring on the marigold flower!

C’mon, he is laughing at himself there, why would he mind if we laugh at him.

No no NO. I still cant forgive him for all those screechy 80s disco numbers that he sang himself!

I don’t know about 7 but “Up” is certainly doing the rounds of my residence since the week began, I mean literally! I find this big blue-and-white blimp, advertising the Disney-Pixar movie, generally hovering over my driveway for a couple hours every morning. (It probably helps that I live in a residential pocket just a stone’s throw from the Century 16 Cinemas where “Up” is currently playing.) 😀

And oh, thanks for that free pass to El Dorado!

Koke – How does Bappi Lahiri weightlift? He stands up. The bling alone would leave me on the floor.

Amey – … give your critics a golden shower?

Sachita – well, the laughter came before I found out he could laugh at himself. So still a meanie! 😳

BV – aww! I think it’s the B-movies that did him in. If he’d just restrained himself a little and come up with more soundtracks like the Tezaab one, I think he’d have had a better time of it. But no man can compose for movies like Hahakaar and get away with it. 😀 To give him his due, he doesn’t want to:

heh heh heh. You’re welcome! (Pls don’t bomb my house!)

    Pitu – Lest we forget:

Up, Up & Away – which reminds me to do a review. Because you clearly need mroe reminders!!

Yeah but he is totally awesome if he can do this. Bappida, may you live long and provide us more such awesomeness 😀

Pitu – wait wait, look up his latest work on Youtube… THEN you can jump off a cliff. This one was actually the least offensive.

DG – that was mean, huh? 😀

    3D – this is a true!

Must be part of some cosmic “Make Love, Not War” propaganda that I should read your PS22 post just as I arrived here to share my find of the day — “Au”rular girl’s Jimmy.

I wanted to say how proud I thought Bappi “Bling” Lahiri would be to see his ordinarily good Disco Dancer number catapulted into immortality, courtesy this cover version by an up-n-comin’ bling bombshell. I wanted to add that the video’s opening instantly took me to MJ’s Liberian Girl (that tribute to Liz Taylor’s Cleopatra), which in turn had me seek out that timeless “Remember the Time” (from Dangerous), whose whole raison d’etre was to entertain the consumed-by-ennui queen Nefertari…Instead, abandoning all such mythological ascensions, I found my feet back on the ground, tapping away to that fifth grader belting out Just Dance.

And it all fell into place…the whole M.I.A philosophy. How her in-your-face style, her seeming irreverence, her supposedly stomping all over serious sentiments — in what appears to be a vagrant wanton disregard for everything that’s Important in the world as we know it — seem to have achieved the opposite effect (i.e. adoration, as opposed to annoyance). It’s Newton’s-Second-Law-of-Motion in Action (N.I.A)! You know, render your subject matter practically weightless, then hit it with all you’ve got, and voila! Watch it shoot up into the stratosphere of collective consciousness. W-o-w. Isn’t she’s good? May the “Force” be with her! 😀 (And to think I was completely oblivious to the maelstrom that’s M.I.A, prior to Slumdog’s Paper Planes…)

When the morning paper headlined “Boy King’s Exhibit: Tut’s Back in S.F” — followed by this blurb, “Thirty years to the month, since King Tut’s first and only reign over the Bay Area, the boy king is back with a vengeance”, followed by a picture of the Gilded Coffin of Tjuya — I took one look at the carving on the coffin and thought to myself, boy, this looks so much like MJ, in all his gilded glory, in the “Remember the Time” video I refer to above…and now, he’s dead and REALLY gone, as suddenly as he dissolves into golden dust that the court cat barely sniffs before warm desert winds blow it away into the Great Beyond…R.I.P, King of Pop…Those sweet memories will alwaysbe dear to me…

Here’s to you, Pitu, me and every other Marigold lover — the classic “Inchworm” song for children (there’s also a Coltrane version of this from ’62, apparently)!
