Mera Bharat Mahan…

13 Aug

banana padega. One family at a time, apparently.

It’s not that I’m not proud of Abhinav Bindra’s achievement, but it’s a searing indictment of Indian sports that our first gold medal comes courtesy the winner’s dedicated (and moneyed) family. And to add insult to injury, after he made it all the way to the Olympics on his own steam, the Indian contingent was so careless that someone actually got to his equipment and fiddled around with it!

Just to put things in perspective:

Abhinav Bindra: 1.

Michael Phelps: 11.

“banana padega”? When did you start channeling Rajiv Gandhi? 😉

Oh, and about Abhinav Bindra, he should understand that there are only 42 officials with 57 athletes, and the officials are not there for baby-sitting the players.

This Abhinav thing inspired me to interview my cousin, a budding cricketer. It’s v depressing. And yeah, world’s second most populous country wins one gold in 114 yrs? I shd cheer but rly I just want to cry :-X

hey don’ be so hard on the comparison… Canada is the only nation to host an Olympics and not win a gold….

watching the Canadian Olympic Track and field Trials this year was like watching the NCAA”s in the US without any of the depth. But hey .. we’re ok with it !!! 🙂

i do get ur point though…one billion plus pop and still short on support…

guess life is so hard for most people who has the time and energy for sport… tons of talent though if they ever do get a systematic program. that happens and they will be another country ahead of canada in the medal count.. but hey we’re ok with it..!!!! realy we are!! 🙂

@OO: I don’t know what Bindra’s family is smoking, but apparently the reporters got the latest scoop on what his mother cooked for breakfast to welcome Abhinav back.

@Amrita: I read somewhere that they were stuck in the traffic while the finals were going on. Aah, the symbolism…
